A New Puppy! Here is What You Will Need
I see you just got a new dog! There is nothing more heartwarming than a brand new puppy. Although they can be mischievous creatures (who very well might chew on your socks and furniture), they are also an incredible little being that will sit, listen, and stay when trained to do so. As time goes on, they become a close friend that enriches your life. We are blessed to have such a friend!!!
What’s the best way to care for our growing little friend so that they will enjoy a lifetime of happiness and companionship? Well, start off with routine physical exams, just like you would for your kids. We want to ensure that they develop properly and are protected against anything that could harm them. This is why the veterinary community is so persistent about vaccines and proper deworming. Extremely critical vaccines for puppies include Distemper, Adenovirus, and Parvovirus and Rabies. Highly recommended vaccines include Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Coronavirus, and Parainfluenza. The Rabies vaccine must a given at 16 weeks of age, according to the state law.
As a general rule, puppies should be seen by a vet around 6 weeks of age, which is shortly after they have been weaned from their mothers. At that time we can do a parasite analysis, a proper dewormer, and administer the appropriate vaccines needed in the series. We follow the remaining vaccines in a total series of 4-5 (dependent on certain endemic areas) approximately 3 weeks apart. Throughout that series, we offer advice on potty training, how to feed them, proper dental hygiene, and what to expect during their development process.
So if you have a furry new addition to your family, bring him to your local veterinarian for health examination. We want your puppy to be around for years to come and we look forward to keeping him or her healthy along the way.
